With summer upon us, it’s time to spend hours in the sun laying out by the pool, making sandcastles at the beach, and swimming in the lake! Though there is definitely a lot of fun to be had outdoors in the water, there is also a lot of potential risks to be on the lookout for.
Keep you and your family safe by ensuring that an adult or licensed lifeguard is actively watching children in the water at all times. If you are watching infants and toddlers then you should be in the water with them and within arm’s reach. And remember that actively watching children in the pool, lake, or at the beach means paying constant attention and steering clear of distractions like talking on the phone, drinking alcohol, and completing household chores.
Enforcing pool rules at your home will also help minimize serious accidents and possible tragedies, too. A few key pool safety rules include no running, no diving if the pool is not deep enough, and no electrical appliances or riding toys like tricycles near the pool.
One of the best ways to protect your kids from pool accidents is to build a fence that completely surrounds the pool in order to prevent young kids from entering the pool. A pool fence will only prove to protect your family if it is climb-resistant, at least 4 feet high, and has no more than 4 inches between each of the vertical slats. Other attributes to consider is that the gate is self-closing and self-latching, and there are hand or footholds that would make it easier to climb.
With a few simple rules and the proper attention, you can ensure that you and your family have a safe and fun summer in the water this year!
